WHAT IS ONLINE NETIQUETTE?

Netiquette is the approved guideline for social behaviors and how to interact online. It also requires good manners. Familiarizing oneself with netiquette helps to reap the maximum benefits of communication and interaction in a social environment, especially in the online learning environment.

Importance of Using Netiquette Online

Using netiquette can help guide against the use of inappropriate languages, misunderstanding and argument colleagues and fellow students. It creates a sense of respect, responsibility, and professionalism not only to students but to online users such as readers, reviewers, bloggers, social media groups and every other online connecting platform you can think of.

The application of Netiquette makes communication clear, precise and realistic. It sets the rules and standard for members of the online classroom, social media engagement forum or any online learning environment to make sure that the environment is save, secured and friendly to all users regardless of cultural backgrounds and also, adopting the culture of common sense by everyone. When netiquette rules are being followed judiciously, it leaves an awesome impression about us both in the virtual classroom and the physical world. It helps individuals to be of good behavior as well as respecting each other in the virtual environment. It prevents individuals from being hurt whether knowing or unknowingly

Consequences of Bad Netiquette

in the Classroom or Learning

Environment

Argument: getting carried away and wanting others in the online classroom to agree with one’s opinion by all means while disagreeing with peers could lead to potentially unhealthy argument and wrong use of words like abusive words; as the interaction gets deeper, one party may begin to feel bad and throw in abusive words. In this case, the argument becomes bad netiquette when it transcends into abuse and could lead to an individual been banned from using the platform or terminated completely from such environment.

Capital letters: Continuous usage of capital letters during discussion could mean that one is shouting and may pass a bad impression to the individuals or class members.

Snubbing or Overlooking: When one is been ignored or snubbed in the virtual environment or classroom, especially when a question is been asked, can cause him/her to feel bad and not wanting to participate in activities as a feeling of not wanted here may have been created in such person’s mind especially when he or she is always been ignored by the same colleague or set of people.

Respect: To whom much is given, more is expected. Respect is reciprocal. An example is using degrading comments or capital letters to address a class member. Addressing a group member without the application of words that show respect and using words that have harsh meaning; this could lead to a lack of collaboration or proper engagement on the part of the affected individuals.

Hurtful jokes: Because we all are from different backgrounds, jokes or words that are acceptable in one’s culture may or may not be acceptable in the other peer member’s culture. Not taking note of people’s mood and cracking jokes at everything could upset other members and thereby cause disagreement. Using unacceptable, defiant and rebellious words could also lead to disciplinary action like suspension or termination.

Proofreading: This is very important, not proofreading, can leave a bad impression in the mind of readers or those we are interacting with, within the online classroom or social media. It could lead to confusion and misunderstanding, the words or sentence posted may have an entirely different meaning or maybe meaningless and even confusing to the readers or members of the group one is collaborating or interacting with. Consequences of not proofreading could move from lack of self-esteem to lack of professionalism.

Giving wrong answers or comments during discussion or assessments could confuse the participants, class or team members which could lead to more confusion in the class and thereby causing the stain of distrust on such a person by peer members.

So this apply to all users of online platform whether you are a student or social media platform user including all small groups; most people do not realize this, so we need to watch our interaction, think of how the next person would feel if we say something and how they would react to it.

  13. I feel like the internet has caused social emotional skills to fall backwards in many ways as people gain courage to say and do things they would never do in front of people they know and physically interact with. Technology is wonderful when used well. When used poorly it has the opportunity to destroy society.
